HFP vs. A2DP: what is the difference?

HFP is a two-way profile built for hands-free calling, including voice playback and microphone audio. A2DP is a one-way media-distribution profile used for higher-quality playback to speakers, headphones, and car stereos. A device can support HFP without supporting A2DP.

What does HFP do?

Hands-Free Profile lets a hands-free unit, such as a car system or headset, control and carry call audio with a phone. Its audio path prioritizes intelligible speech and two-way communication rather than music fidelity.

HFP is why a driver may hear a caller through the car and speak through the vehicle microphone. Exact audio behavior depends on the profile version, codecs, phone, and receiver. In practical use, an HFP workaround should be expected to sound narrower and often mono compared with a normal music stream.

What does A2DP do?

Advanced Audio Distribution Profile carries media audio from a source, such as a phone, to a receiving device. It is the conventional Bluetooth path for music, podcasts, and other playback where higher fidelity than call audio is expected.

A2DP does not by itself provide the microphone path needed for a phone call. Devices commonly switch profiles when a call starts, which explains why audio quality can change during a call.

Does a newer Bluetooth version guarantee A2DP?

No. The Bluetooth version and supported profiles are separate facts. To know whether a car or accessory accepts media audio, check its manual, source menu, and phone connection settings for explicit media-audio or A2DP support.

Where does Bluetooth Streamer Pro fit?

Bluetooth Streamer Pro targets situations where HFP works but A2DP is unavailable. It attempts to use the call-audio route for supported phone audio. It cannot add a missing hardware profile, restore stereo fidelity, or guarantee that a particular receiver will keep the HFP route open.
